Connect MailerLite to Qualisend

Qualisend checks your MailerLite subscribers and writes each result into five subscriber fields, which you can then use in segments to keep bad addresses out of your campaigns. This guide walks through connecting, choosing a source, real-time checks for new subscribers, schedules and the errors you may run into.

Before you start

  • A Qualisend account. You can sign up for free.
  • To connect MailerLite, the Owner or Admin role in Qualisend (who can do what).
  • Access to Integrations → API in your MailerLite account, to create an API token.
  • Enough credits for the active subscribers you plan to check.

Connect MailerLite

  1. 1

    Find MailerLite in Qualisend

Click Integrations in the Qualisend sidebar and open the MailerLite tile in the Email marketing group.

  2. 2

Create an API token in MailerLite

In MailerLite, go to Integrations → API and click Generate new token, then copy the token. Keep it private, like a password. Real-time checks need a token that can manage webhooks, so if MailerLite offers access options for the token, give it full access.

  3. 3

    Paste it and connect

Back in Qualisend, paste the token into MailerLite API key and click Connect. Qualisend checks it with MailerLite, which takes a few seconds. You then see “MailerLite connected.”, and a Connected label appears next to the MailerLite name.

What you can clean

Under What to clean, the picker offers three kinds of source:

  • Subscribers, with one entry, All subscribers: every active subscriber in the account. Subscribers with another status, such as unsubscribed, bounced or unconfirmed, are left out.
  • Groups: the active members of one group. The picker lists your first 1,000 groups.
  • Segments: the people MailerLite currently includes in that segment. The picker lists your first 300 segments.

For All subscribers and groups, the line under the picker shows how many active subscribers Qualisend found and the most credits the clean can use. Segments show no number there, because MailerLite's segment counts aren't reliable; they're counted while being read.

If MailerLite doesn't return your segments, only Subscribers and Groups appear. Reload the page later to get them back.

Run a clean

  1. 1

Pick a source and what to do

Choose a source under What to clean, and pick an option under What to do with the results:

    • Tag contacts with results writes each result into the Qualisend fields on the subscriber. It doesn't add MailerLite tags or move anyone between groups.
    • Verify & export a clean list checks the addresses without changing anything in MailerLite; you download the results.

Keep Repeat on Just once for now; schedules are covered below. The same form also sits on the Bulk cleaning page.

  2. 2

Start it and follow the progress

Click Verify & clean. A message confirms what Qualisend is reading, and the clean's results page opens. It shows Preparing your list… until every subscriber has been read from MailerLite; for a segment, the number of rows shown is an estimate until then. Checking starts as soon as reading ends, and the results page works as on every platform.

  3. 3

Look at a subscriber in MailerLite

If you chose Tag contacts with results, Qualisend writes the fields in batches once the whole clean has finished; for hundreds of thousands of subscribers, allow a few hours. Then open a subscriber from that source in MailerLite: Qualisend Status and the other Qualisend fields show its result.

The Qualisend fields in MailerLite

Tag contacts with results fills five custom fields on each subscriber it checks, unknown results included. Qualisend creates the fields in your account the first time it writes results, and every new result overwrites the last one. Nothing else on the subscriber changes: status, groups and consent stay as they are.

FieldWhat it holds
Qualisend StatusText · qualisend_statusThe verdict: deliverable, risky, undeliverable or unknown
Qualisend ScoreNumber · qualisend_scoreA number from 0 to 100
Qualisend ReasonText · qualisend_reasonWhy, as a code such as accepted_email, invalid_domain or timeout
Qualisend FlagsText · qualisend_flagsExtra signals, comma-separated: free_mail, disposable, role, catch_all, full_mailbox or disabled. Blank when there are none.
Qualisend CheckedDate · qualisend_checkedThe date of the check

The status guide explains each verdict.

Keep bad addresses out of your sends

To leave bad addresses out of a campaign, create a segment in MailerLite with a condition on Qualisend Status that excludes undeliverable, and send to that segment. Exclude risky too if you'd rather be strict; What to do with each result lists an action for every verdict.

Qualisend Score is a number field, so segment conditions can compare it: for example, hold back anything below a score you choose.

Deleting or unsubscribing the bad addresses is up to you; Qualisend never does it.

Check new subscribers as they join

Real-time checks verify each new subscriber soon after MailerLite reports them, and write the result into the same five fields. Turning them on takes one click, because Qualisend creates the webhook in your MailerLite account for you.

For sign-up forms on your own site, you can also check addresses before they reach MailerLite with the verification API.

  1. 1

    Choose which subscribers to check

On the MailerLite page in Qualisend, click Set up on the Real-time verify-on-signup card; this takes the Owner or Admin role. Under Which subscribers to check, choose:

    • All new subscribers: everyone who subscribes through your forms. Imports and API sign-ups can count too.
    • Only when someone joins a group: pick the group from Choose a group…. Existing subscribers who are added to that group are checked as well.
  2. 2

    Switch real-time checks on

Click Turn on real-time checks. A webhook named Qualisend real-time verification appears in your MailerLite account, created by Qualisend; there's nothing to copy or paste. The card then says Real-time checks are on. Change edits the setting, and Turn off deletes the webhook again.

  3. 3

    Test it

Subscribe through one of your MailerLite forms with an address you own. Refresh the Qualisend page after a minute: the card shows when the last check arrived, and the subscriber's Qualisend Status field holds the result.

  4. 4

Hold the welcome email until the result is in

In the MailerLite automation that sends your welcome email, put a short delay before the email, then a condition on Qualisend Status: send unless it's undeliverable, so subscribers whose check hasn't finished still get the email.

The Qualisend fields exist in MailerLite only after results have been written once. If Qualisend Status isn't in the list yet, wait for the test subscriber's result, or clean a group with Tag contacts with results selected.

  • The same address is checked at most once in 7 days, whichever option you picked.
  • Subscribers who haven't confirmed a double opt-in yet are checked; unsubscribed, bounced and junk subscribers are skipped.
  • Imports and API sign-ups may trigger checks as well. Before a large import, read Real-time checks, which also covers credits and a zero balance.
  • Under Webhooks pointing at Qualisend, the card lists the MailerLite webhooks that send here and shows Working, Needs a fix or Can't check next to each. A webhook with a problem comes with a note saying what's wrong.
  • Prefer an automation? The card's Set it up manually instead section explains how to add a Webhook step, available on paid MailerLite plans, to an automation that starts When subscriber joins a group. Its URL identifies your workspace, so don't share it.

Clean on a schedule

Pick an auto-clean interval under Repeat and click Verify & clean: the clean runs now and then repeats (how schedules run). Each source has one schedule, so scheduling the same source again replaces it. If this schedule's previous run hasn't finished, writing results back included, the next one waits and tries again about an hour later.

Schedules are listed under Scheduled auto-cleans on the MailerLite page, where a run may also be marked:

  • Last run: no contacts: the group, or the whole account, had no active subscribers.
  • Skipped - reconnect MailerLite: MailerLite wasn't connected when the run was due. After you connect again, the schedule carries on from its next date.

Limits and credits

  • Each run, auto-cleans included, reads up to 1,000,000 active subscribers from the source. A bigger source gets its first 1,000,000 cleaned on every run.
  • The credits a clean needs are set aside from MailerLite's own count when it starts. A segment has no reliable count, so Qualisend sets aside an estimate of up to 5,000 credits and adds more while reading.
  • If your balance runs out while subscribers are still being read, Qualisend stops reading and cleans the subscribers it already has.
  • Credits set aside beyond what was actually read come back once reading ends. The other credit rules are in How credits are counted.

Disconnect or reconnect

Click Disconnect on the MailerLite page. There's no confirmation step, and it takes the Owner or Admin role.

What happens next:

  • Qualisend removes your API token and deletes its Qualisend real-time verification webhook from MailerLite. If that fails, a message says so; then delete the webhook yourself under Integrations → API, Webhooks.
  • Your subscribers keep the Qualisend fields and the values already written.
  • Schedules stay, but each run shows Skipped - reconnect MailerLite until you connect again.
  • A clean that's still reading subscribers ends with Verification failed, and one that's still writing results stops writing them.
  • Results of past cleans remain in Qualisend.

To connect again, paste a token as in the first steps. Real-time checks are off after reconnecting, so turn them on again.

If Qualisend tells you your real-time webhook URL changed, paste the new URL into any MailerLite automation that sends subscribers to Qualisend.

Troubleshooting

“MailerLite rejected that API key. Check it and try again.”

MailerLite didn't accept the token: it may be mistyped or deleted. Create a new one under Integrations → API and paste it again.

“Couldn't reach MailerLite — try again.”

Qualisend got no answer from MailerLite while checking the token. Wait a moment and click Connect again.

“MailerLite is busy. Try again in a minute.”

Too many requests are going to your MailerLite account right now, often while a large clean is saving its results. Wait a minute and try again.

“Couldn't load MailerLite: could not load mailerlite groups”

The clean form couldn't fetch your groups. If the token was deleted in MailerLite, disconnect and connect again with a new one; otherwise reload the page in a minute.

“That group no longer exists in MailerLite. Pick another one.”

The group was deleted in MailerLite after the page loaded. Reload the page and pick another source. Turning on real-time checks, or saving a change to them, for a group that no longer exists shows the same message.

“0 active subscribers - nothing to clean here”

That group, or the whole account, has no active subscribers. Pick another source; starting the clean anyway ends with “no addresses found in that source”.

“MailerLite didn't let the saved API key manage webhooks. Reconnect with a key that has full access, or set it up manually (below).”

The saved token isn't allowed to create webhooks. Create a new token in MailerLite (with full access, if it offers the choice), disconnect, connect with the new token and turn real-time checks on. Or follow Set it up manually instead.

My segment shows no subscriber count

That's expected. MailerLite's segment counts aren't reliable, so Qualisend counts a segment while reading it, and the results page shows the real number once reading is done.

None of my subscribers got the Qualisend fields

Fields are written only by a clean that used Tag contacts with results and finished. Stopped cleans, failed cleans and Verify & export a clean list write nothing. On a big source, writing takes a while after the clean finishes, so look again later.

Some subscribers are missing the fields

A subscriber deleted from MailerLite during the clean, or whose email address changed, can't be updated, and Qualisend never adds subscribers. If others are still blank a few hours after the clean finished, run it again.

My clean failed

The results page shows Verification failed when Qualisend can't finish reading the source, most often because MailerLite was disconnected, the token was deleted, or the group or segment was removed. An empty segment ends this way too. Fix the cause and start the clean again.

New subscribers aren't being checked

Open the real-time card with Manage and look at Webhooks pointing at Qualisend: a webhook with a problem says what's wrong. With one group chosen, only subscribers added to that group are checked, and an address checked in the past 7 days isn't checked again. If the workspace ran out of credits, checks resume after you top up.
