Brevo's native hygiene centers on the blocklist. When an address hard-bounces, Brevo treats the error as permanent and blocklists it automatically - no retry - and the same blocklist aggregates unsubscriptions, spam complaints, and hard bounces in one place. Blocklisted contacts are skipped when you send a campaign, so you don't spend email credits on them, and Brevo deliberately keeps them in your account rather than deleting them so the record of their wish not to be contacted survives. For addresses Brevo has actually mailed, that's reliable automatic hygiene.
What it can't catch
The catch is timing: every one of those mechanisms is reactive - it needs a send and a failure to fire. An address is only blocklisted after it hard-bounces on a real campaign, which means you've already spent the credit and taken the reputation hit. Never-mailed invalids from imports and signup forms, disposable addresses, role addresses, and decayed mailboxes all look healthy until your first send touches them - exactly when a mailbox provider forms its first impression of your domain. An imported list is the sharpest case: it arrives with its bounce history stripped, so addresses that were already failing elsewhere look brand new, and Brevo will happily spend a credit delivering each one straight into a hard bounce.
Why a clean Brevo list matters
On Brevo the stake isn't a contact-count pricing tier - Brevo bills primarily on emails sent, not on how many contacts you store, so a blocklisted contact sitting in your account already costs you nothing. The real cost of a dead address is the wasted send credit and the reputation damage of its first failed delivery. Every never-mailed invalid you leave in a list is one credit spent delivering into a hard bounce - and that hard bounce is precisely the signal Gmail and Yahoo's 2024 sender rules, and Brevo's own bounce-rate limits, penalize you for. Verifying before the send means the credit is never spent and the reputation hit is never taken; the blocklist only ever helps after the address has already failed once.
