Keep your Intercom contacts clean and deliverable

Intercom is where your support conversations, outbound messages, and product notifications live, and it only learns an address is bad after a ticket reply or message hard-bounces. Qualisend verifies your Intercom contacts up front so you catch the dead addresses before a customer misses a reply. Connect Intercom natively to clean users and leads in place, or hit the Qualisend REST API to verify every new contact the moment it is created.

Connect Intercom and clean it in place

Connect Intercom and Qualisend verifies your support contacts in place — no export. Clean the contacts you already have, flag the undeliverable ones, and check every new contact in real time so your replies and notifications reach the customer.

Prefer to work by hand, or verify at signup through your own stack? The CSV export → verify → reimport loop below and the REST API are fully supported too.

What Intercom cleans for you

Intercom does handle bounces after the fact: when an outbound email or ticket reply hard-bounces, Intercom flags the contact and stops emailing that address on future messages and Series. Contacts carry a subscription state, so anyone who unsubscribes or is marked as bounced is automatically excluded from your outbound audiences. You can also archive contacts to pull them out of your active workspace and reporting. It is solid reactive hygiene, but every part of it depends on a message going out and failing first.

The gap it leaves

What it can't catch

What Intercom cannot see is the invalid address that has never been mailed yet: the typo'd signup, the fake email from a trial account, or the bulk list you imported through the API or a CSV. Those contacts sit in your workspace looking healthy until the first reply bounces and burns a little more of your sender reputation. Intercom also does not distinguish disposable domains, role inboxes like support@ or info@, mailboxes that have gone dead since signup, or catch-all domains that accept everything and reveal nothing. And imported contacts arrive with their prior bounce history stripped, so Intercom starts every one of them from a clean slate it has no reason to trust.

Why a clean Intercom list matters

Bad addresses in Intercom are not just noise: a bounced ticket reply or notification means a customer never got your answer, the conversation reopens, and your SLA quietly slips. Every message you send to a dead address also chips at your sending domain's reputation, which raises the odds that your good messages land in spam. Since the 2024 Gmail and Yahoo bulk-sender rules took effect, mailbox providers hold you to a hard bounce and spam-complaint ceiling, and a list full of never-verified contacts is the fastest way to trip it. On top of that, dead contacts inflate the audience counts Intercom meters against, so you can end up paying to store and message people who will never receive a thing.

Prefer CSV or the API? Here's the manual path

The native connector is the fastest route, but the CSV loop works on any Intercom plan: export from Intercom, verify in Qualisend, and act on the results.

1

Export your Intercom contacts

In Intercom, open Contacts, build a segment or filter for the audience you want to check (for example role is User), select the contacts, and choose Export as CSV. Intercom emails you a download link for the file.

2

Verify the file in Qualisend

Upload the CSV to Qualisend as a bulk job. A single job handles up to 1,000,000 addresses, duplicates are only charged once, and the free plan includes 100 credits that never expire so you can test a sample first. Watch live progress and download the cleaned CSV when it finishes.

3

Read the results

Every address comes back as deliverable, risky, undeliverable, or unknown, each with a reason code, sub-flags for catch-all, disposable, role, and full mailbox, the MX provider, SMTP probe evidence, and a 0-100 confidence score.

4

Act in Intercom

Back in Intercom, archive the undeliverable contacts so no reply or Series reaches them, unsubscribe the risky ones from email, and tag catch-all and role addresses into a segment you send to more carefully. You can also write the verdict to a custom contact attribute for reporting.

Or automate it at signup

Skip the export loop entirely: verify at the point of capture by calling the Qualisend REST API when a contact is created, or wire a Zapier, Make, or n8n flow off Intercom's new-contact trigger so the address is scored and tagged before your first message ever goes out. The native Intercom connector does this for you automatically, re-verifying new contacts in real time and re-cleaning your workspace on a schedule.

What Qualisend flags on every address

Native connector status

The native Intercom connector is live — connect it in Qualisend under Integrations and clean your list without a single CSV. New contacts are verified automatically, and you can re-verify on a schedule.

What to do with each result

Every address comes back with a verdict and sub-flags. Here's the action that keeps your Intercom list clean without throwing away contacts you can still reach.

deliverableKeep the contact active and subscribed; safe to message and reply normally.
deliverable + role flagKeep it but tag as a role inbox (support@, info@) and move it to a segment; exclude from personal one-to-one outreach.
risky + catch-all flagTag and add to a monitored segment; throttle sends and watch bounces rather than blasting the whole domain.
risky + disposable flagUnsubscribe from email or archive the contact; a throwaway address is not worth your reputation.
unknownLeave the contact as is and skip it this round; let the native connector re-verify on the next scheduled clean.
undeliverableArchive the contact and unsubscribe from email so no reply or Series keeps hitting a dead mailbox.
