What ActiveCampaign cleans for you
ActiveCampaign's native hygiene runs on its contact list statuses. The moment an address hard-bounces, the contact is given the Bounced status and receives no further campaigns or automation emails; a contact that soft-bounces three times in a row across separate campaigns is then treated as a hard bounce and marked Bounced too. Suppression is automatic but it isn't deletion — a Bounced contact stays in your account, and ActiveCampaign simply stops sending to it. For addresses ActiveCampaign has actually mailed, that's reliable automatic hygiene.
What it can't catch
The catch is that every one of those mechanisms is reactive — it needs a send and a bounce to fire. Never-mailed invalids from imports and signup forms, disposable addresses accepted at signup, role addresses, and decayed mailboxes all look active until your first campaign proves otherwise — which is exactly when a mailbox provider forms its first impression of your domain. An imported list is the sharpest case: it arrives with its bounce history stripped, so addresses that were already failing on another platform look brand new to ActiveCampaign.
Why a clean ActiveCampaign list matters
On ActiveCampaign the stakes turn on a billing rule that changed in late 2025. For accounts created on or after 3 November 2025, every contact counts toward your plan limit regardless of status — a Bounced or unsubscribed contact still costs you, and only deleting dead addresses takes them off the billable total. For accounts created on or before 2 November 2025, only active contacts count, so bounced and unsubscribed contacts are already excluded. Either way a dead address is more than an invoice line: your first campaign to an unverified list is where Gmail and Yahoo — under their 2024 sender rules — and ActiveCampaign's own deliverability monitoring form their first impression of your domain. Cleaning before the send protects both your bill and the inbox placement of the campaigns that actually convert.

ActiveCampaign has no “import to suppressed” list, so you act on the contact directly: filter your results to undeliverable, then unsubscribe those contacts (which stops all campaigns and automations) or delete them. On accounts created on or after 3 November 2025, where every contact is billable regardless of status, deleting is what actually removes them from your count — check your account's billing date before you decide.
