Keep your Ontraport contacts clean and deliverable

Ontraport retires an address once it hard-bounces by flipping its Bulk Email Status and holding it out of future broadcasts, so it reacts fast to a proven-dead mailbox. What it can't do is judge an address it has never mailed, and those never-mailed invalids from imports and web forms are what quietly erode your deliverability. Qualisend closes that gap: connect Ontraport with our live native connector to verify and clean in place, or run the CSV loop and the REST API when you'd rather do it by hand.

Connect Ontraport and clean it in place

Connect Ontraport with an API key and Qualisend verifies the lists you already have — right inside Ontraport, no export. Dead and risky addresses are suppressed or archived for you, every new subscriber is checked in real time, and you can re-verify on a schedule so the list never drifts back to dirty.

Prefer to work by hand, or verify at signup through your own stack? The CSV export → verify → reimport loop below and the REST API are fully supported too.

What Ontraport cleans for you

Ontraport's native hygiene runs on the Bulk Email Status field that sits on every contact record. When an address hard-bounces, Ontraport sets that status to a bounced value and stops including the contact in bulk email; repeated soft bounces escalate the same way, and a contact who opts out or files a spam complaint is moved to an opted-out status and excluded automatically. None of it is deletion — the record stays in your account, Ontraport simply stops mailing it. For addresses Ontraport has actually sent to, that's reliable, hands-off hygiene.

The gap it leaves

What it can't catch

The catch is that every one of those mechanisms is reactive: it needs a send and a bounce to fire. Never-mailed invalids from CSV imports and web-form signups, disposable throwaway domains, role addresses, catch-all domains, and mailboxes that decayed since you collected them all carry a clean Bulk Email Status until your first broadcast proves otherwise, which is exactly when a mailbox provider forms its first impression of your sending domain. An imported list is the sharpest case: it lands in Ontraport with its bounce history stripped, so addresses that were already failing on another platform look brand new.

Why a clean Ontraport list matters

On Ontraport the stakes are doubled, because Ontraport prices on the number of contacts in your account and a bounced or opted-out contact still counts toward that tier until you delete it. Every dead address is both a line on your invoice and a drag on the engagement metrics that decide inbox placement. Your first broadcast to an unverified list is where Gmail and Yahoo, under their 2024 bulk-sender rules, measure your bounce and complaint rates and where your sending reputation is set. Cleaning before the send does two jobs at once: it can move you under a contact pricing threshold, and it protects the placement of the campaigns that actually convert.

Prefer CSV or the API? Here's the manual path

The native connector is the fastest route, but the CSV loop works on any Ontraport plan: export from Ontraport, verify in Qualisend, and act on the results.

1

Export a Group from Ontraport

Open Contacts, apply a filter or pick a saved Group, then use the gear/Bulk Actions menu and choose Export Group. Ontraport builds the CSV and emails you a download link.

2

Verify the file in Qualisend

Upload the CSV to Qualisend bulk cleaning — up to 1,000,000 addresses per job, duplicates charged once, with live progress — or paste addresses directly. The free plan's 100 credits that never expire cover a first sample.

3

Read the results

Every address returns deliverable, risky, undeliverable, or unknown with a machine-readable reason code and sub-flags (catch-all, disposable, role, full mailbox), plus the MX provider and SMTP probe detail as evidence. Download the cleaned CSV.

4

Act on the contacts in Ontraport

Re-import the cleaned file to match on email, then bulk-edit Bulk Email Status to an opted-out value to stop mail, or tag the undeliverables into a Group and bulk-delete them. Because Ontraport bills on total contacts, deleting is what actually takes a dead address off your count.

Or automate it at signup

The fastest path is the live native connector: connect Ontraport inside Qualisend to verify and write results back in place — set Bulk Email Status, tag, or archive — with real-time checks on new contacts and scheduled re-cleans. Prefer to build it yourself? Verify at the point of capture with the Qualisend REST API (scoped keys, rate limits, webhooks) or a Zapier, Make, or n8n flow so a new Ontraport contact is checked before it's ever added to your count.

What Qualisend flags on every address

Native connector status

The native Ontraport connector is live — connect it in Qualisend under Integrations and clean your list without a single CSV. New contacts are verified automatically, and you can re-verify on a schedule.

What to do with each result

Every address comes back with a verdict and sub-flags. Here's the action that keeps your Ontraport list clean without throwing away contacts you can still reach.

deliverableKeep sending as normal.
deliverable + role flagKeep for transactional content; tag out of engagement-judged automations.
risky + catch-all flagTag into a dedicated Group and throttle your sends.
risky + disposable flagSet Bulk Email Status to opted-out or delete — the inbox was built to expire.
unknownKeep active and re-verify next clean — usually greylisting, not a verdict on the mailbox.
undeliverableDelete to take it off your billable contact count; don't wait for the bounce to prove it.
